Our first guests of the season arrived yesterday, a group of high-school juniors from around the State of Maine. The girls are in the 1780 Farmhouse and the boys in the Lodge (along with their respective chaperones). These students will be here for the week, participating in the Keller BLOOM program at Bigelow Labs. This is a program that gives these students an opportunity to practice ocean science research in a real, hands-on way. You can read more about it at http://www.bigelow.org/education/keller-bloom/ This year marks the 25th anniversary of the program, and the 25th year that the students have been staying at Harborfields as well!
But we still have work to do to get some of the other cottages opened -- turning on the water after a long hard winter is always full of surprises, despite our best efforts at draining the system in the fall! Pipes split, joints open up, faucet washers dry out, water heaters corrode... And we are wrapping up our toilet-replacement project -— new 1.6 gpf models instead of the old ~5 gallon-per-flush types. Of course, temperatures need to be warm enough for the wax rings to be pliable when you put the new toilet in place, but given the cold winter and spring we’ve had, you can imagine how that has been going!
Back in Keene, we fired Wendy’s new gas-fueled pottery kiln for the first time this spring, containing a number of Harborfields-logo mugs! They really came out beautifully! They are available for sale in the office at Harborfields, along with other pieces of Wendy’s pottery, but quantities are limited. Tim is now finishing up the spring semester at Keene State College, about to take the hand-off from Wendy in Maine. Bennett has transitioned from skiing to track, where he competes in 300m intermediate hurdles, 110m high hurdles and 4x100 and 4x400 relay events for the Keene High School team. He has qualified for the state meet in all his events. Bennett also now has his driver’s license!!!
In terms of bookings, the summer is pretty full, but as of this writing we currently have the following openings:
We also have plenty of availability from Memorial Day weekend through mid-June, and it is not too early think about the fall season, either! You can always check our availability online through our website -- you can even make your reservations right there! (or you can e-mail or call us, if you prefer.)
We are looking forward to another great season at Harborfields, and to seeing all of you soon!
